Materia Medica Pura Project (MMPP)
Since T.F. Allen and Constantine Hering published their comprehensive work on materia medica towards the end of the 19th century, there has been no further systematic review of materia medica. Since then, a large number of drug provings, cured cases, poisoning reports and clinical experiences have been published. However, these can only be found scattered in a vast amount of literature. Valuable information lies unused in old journals and books and is not accessible to homeopaths for daily practice. The main goal of the MMPP is to collect, catalog and integrate this material into our materia medica and repertories to improve the prescribing reliability of all practicing homeopaths.
Under the initiative and direction of André Saine, 50 colleagues in Europe and North and South America have been working on a comprehensive revision of the Materia Medica of a total of 600 remedies since 2005. All available sources of a remedy are being examined: Trials, case histories, toxicological reports and clinical experience. For each remedy, a monograph based on reliable sources is compiled from this material. More recent information is only integrated if it is not speculative.
The work culminates in the presentation of the genius (a precise summary of the most characteristic features) of each remedy and in the improvement of the repertory in the form of supplements, changes to the value of remedies, corrections to the wording of the rubrics and the creation of new rubrics and sub-rubrics. The genius of a remedy allows the homeopath to quickly access the most essential characteristics of a remedy in order to compare it with the symptoms of the case to be treated, thus making it much easier to differentiate between remedies.
The improvements to the repertory based on the Complete Repertory 4.5 and the revision of the materia medica based on reliable sources increase our ability to find the most similar remedy for a case. Since 2021, these additions have also been integrated into the 'Reliable Repertory'.
Provings, cured cases, poisonings and clinical experiences published in the last 125 years have generally not been included in our materia medica and repertories, or only unsystematically. Many characteristic symptoms, even from the oldest sources such as Samuel Hahnemann's Pure Materia Medica and the Chronic Diseases as well as Allen's Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica , have not yet found their way into our repertories. For example, around 800 entries of Ipecacuanha, over 1,500 of Hepar sulphuris, over 1,500 of Nitricum acidum and over 3,000 of Plumbum met. have been added.
On average, about 30% of the characteristic symptoms of our remedies are missing in the repertory. For many remedies, only a minority of their characteristic symptoms are included in the repertories. Many remedies, even if they are clearly indicated, are probably not prescribed because they are simply not thought of, as they hardly appear in the repertorization and are difficult to find in the Materia Medica.
The MMPP is intended to be accessible to all practicing homeopaths. It is currently only available in English. The Materia Medica resulting from the MMPP will only ever be available in digital form, as it is continually being supplemented with new or newly discovered information. It is planned to update more than 600 drug monographs and, in the long term, to integrate this data into a modern database. In addition, the participants in the project also repeatedly carry out tests or reviews of small, untested or insufficiently tested medicinal products.
This project is a real milestone in the improvement of our materia medica and repertories, the two most important tools of homeopathy.
